"How much will it cost me to charge at home?" is question three, right after "which charger should I get?" and "does my switchboard need upgrading?" Most EV owners underestimate home charging costs at first, then realise they're still paying a fraction of what petrol cost them.
Here are the real numbers for Queensland in 2026.
QLD electricity tariffs relevant to EV charging
Queensland electricity pricing (via Energex distribution, retailer prices vary slightly):
Tariff 11 (General Supply, the standard residential tariff):
- Peak: approximately 30-33c/kWh depending on retailer.
- Most flat-rate residential plans are in this range for all usage.
- If you plug your EV in at 6pm after work, you're on this rate.
Tariff 12 (Time of Use):
- Peak (typically 4pm-9pm weekdays): 42-46c/kWh.
- Shoulder: 23-27c/kWh.
- Off-peak: 18-22c/kWh.
- If you're on a Time of Use plan and charging at peak time, you're paying significantly more. Switch to overnight charging or change tariff.
Tariff 33 (Controlled Load, off-peak):
- Approximately 18-22c/kWh, controlled by Energex via ripple signal (usually available 10pm-7am, varies by night and area).
- The EV charger must be connected via a separately metered Tariff 33 circuit, with an approved load controller. Not all chargers are compatible with Tariff 33 wiring.
- Installation adds roughly $350-$550 for the separate circuit and ripple receiver. Worth it if you charge a full battery every night.
Solar self-consumption (not a tariff, but the best deal in the house):
- Feed-in tariff in SE QLD: approximately 5-6c/kWh.
- Import rate: 30-33c/kWh.
- Every kWh of surplus solar that charges your EV instead of going to the grid saves you 24-27c/kWh compared to buying from the grid at peak.
- With a Zappi or Ocular in Eco mode, this happens automatically during the day.
Charging with solar: what it actually saves

The best charging window in Brisbane

Most smart chargers (Zappi, Ocular, Tesla) allow schedule programming. Set the schedule once, forget it. The car will be full by morning at off-peak rates.
