How much does a Brisbane electrician cost in 2026?

Standard daytime hourly work in Brisbane runs around $130 to $160 per hour for a licensed contractor with insurance. Voltech doesn't charge by the hour for most jobs, we quote a fixed price for the whole scope. A typical powerpoint install is $220, a switchboard upgrade is $1,650 and up, and after-hours emergency call-outs are a flat $165. You always know the number before we start.

Are you licensed and insured?

Yes. Voltech holds a current QLD electrical contractor's licence and $20M public liability. We can email a copy of both before any job starts, no questions asked.

Do you charge a call-out fee?

Free for standard quotes during business hours. After-hours emergency call-outs are a fixed $165 which covers the first 30 minutes on-site. We always tell you the price before any work begins.

What's the difference between a circuit breaker and a safety switch?

Accepted Answer

A circuit breaker protects the wiring in your wall from overload (so the cable doesn't catch fire). A safety switch (RCD) protects the human from electric shock (so you don't get killed by a faulty appliance). You need both. Modern RCBOs combine them in a single device per circuit, which is what we install on every job.

How long does a switchboard upgrade take?

Most domestic switchboard upgrades in Brisbane are done in 4 to 6 hours, with the power off for around 2 hours of that. We schedule the cut-over around your day, work tidy, and you'll have everything back on before dinner.

Are interconnected smoke alarms now mandatory in QLD?

Accepted Answer

Yes. From 1 January 2027 every Queensland home, owner-occupied or rented, must have photoelectric, interconnected, hard-wired smoke alarms in every bedroom, every hallway connecting bedrooms, and at least one on every other storey. Voltech installs to that spec on every job and emails the compliance certificate the same day.

Do you give written, fixed-price quotes?

Yes. Every job over $400 gets a written quote with a fixed price for the agreed scope. The quote stands for 30 days. No 'time and materials' surprises and no padding the hours.

What's your warranty?

Accepted Answer

Lifetime workmanship warranty on all Voltech installs, plus the manufacturer's warranty on every part we fit. If anything we did fails, we come back and fix it at no charge. The warranty stays with the property, so it transfers if you sell.

Question 11

Can you handle Energex paperwork?

Accepted Answer

Yes, we lodge it for you. For switchboard upgrades, off-peak tariff changes, EV charger applications and any service-mains work, Voltech files the Energex notification, the application and the Certificate of Test on your behalf.

Do you do small jobs, or only full installs?

Accepted Answer

Single powerpoint, ceiling fan swap, dodgy light switch, yes to all of those. We don't have a minimum charge over our standard service rate, and we'd rather come do a small job today than have you remember us a year later when something goes properly wrong.

Are your electricians employees or contractors?

Accepted Answer

John is the licensed electrician who runs Voltech and turns up on every job. There's no call centre and no rotating sub-contractor crew. If you book Voltech, you get the owner.

How do payments work?

Accepted Answer

Card on the day, bank transfer, or invoice on 7-day terms for builders and property managers. We accept Visa, Mastercard, Amex and tap-to-pay through the van. No deposit required for most domestic jobs.

Will you tell me if I don't actually need the job done?

Accepted Answer

Yes, that's the deal. If we come out for a quote and the honest answer is 'this is fine for another five years', we'll tell you. We make money on jobs that genuinely need doing.
