Home EV charger install in Brisbane: cost, process and the things nobody warns you about

What you'll actually pay for a 7kW or 22kW EV charger install at home in Brisbane, the load assessment process, and the four gotchas that bump the price.

EV uptake in Brisbane is real. About 1 in 4 of my switchboard-upgrade calls in 2026 has been driven by an EV charger that the homeowner now wants to install. Here's the actual install playbook.

The honest ballpark

For a typical 7kW single-phase home charger in Brisbane:

  • Voltech price: $1,290-$1,890 for a straightforward install
  • + $1,650-$2,400 if your switchboard needs upgrading at the same time
  • + $700-$1,500 if your consumer mains needs upgrading
  • + $1,200-$2,500 if you need to go to 3-phase service

For a 22kW (3-phase) install:

  • Voltech price: $2,100-$2,900 assuming you already have 3-phase to the home
  • Most Brisbane homes don't have 3-phase, adding it is the big cost above

The load assessment (and why it matters)

Before we install the charger, we do an Energex-style load calculation on your house:

  • Existing main switch rating
  • Existing maximum demand (in kVA)
  • Adding the EV charger's peak load
  • Comparing total to your service capacity

Single-phase Brisbane homes are typically 63A or 80A service. A 7kW charger pulls 32A continuous. That's 50% of an 80A service on its own. If your house is also running ducted AC, an electric oven, induction cooktop and a heat-pump hot water, you're likely over your service capacity.

Most installers skip this step and just hook the charger up. Voltech doesn't. We tell you the load picture honestly, and we'll either:

  1. Confirm you're fine and proceed at the standard price
  2. Recommend an upgrade that we can do same-day
  3. Recommend the OCPP load-management option (cheaper than upgrading) where the charger throttles itself when the rest of the house is running hot.

Single-phase vs 3-phase

  • Single-phase 7kW, adds about 40km of range per hour. For 99% of households that's plenty (you don't drive 280km a day). Cheap install, single charger, single circuit.
  • 3-phase 11kW, adds about 65km of range per hour. Useful if you have two EVs and a long commute.
  • 3-phase 22kW, adds about 130km of range per hour. Almost no domestic vehicle accepts 22kW AC; most cap at 11kW. Don't over-spec.

Voltech's default recommendation for a Brisbane single-EV household: 7kW single-phase. That's your sweet spot.

Charger brands we install

We work with all of:

  • Tesla Wall Connector, pretty, reliable, Tesla-native, works with non-Tesla via app config
  • Wallbox Pulsar Plus, best app, OCPP standard, solar diversion
  • Ocular IQ. Australian-made, great solar diversion, Wifi
  • Fronius Wattpilot, best if you have Fronius solar, integrated diversion
  • Schneider EVlink, commercial-grade reliability, great if you also need 3-phase

We don't install no-name AliExpress chargers. They almost never carry the right OCPP / RCM Type B certifications and they make compliance a nightmare.

Four things that bump the price

  1. Cable run distance. Charger 30m from the switchboard? That's a long, expensive cable run.
  2. Trenching. If the cable has to go under a driveway, that's saw-cut, trench, conduit, backfill, repair. Add ~$1,200.
  3. Switchboard upgrade. Probably the most common, many older Brisbane boards don't have a free slot for a 32A circuit, or the main switch isn't rated for the additional load.
  4. Energex DNSP application. For chargers >7kW or 3-phase converts, you need an Energex application. We do it for you, but the network fee gets passed through.

Solar and EV diversion

If you have solar, you can have your EV charger automatically charge from excess solar export instead of the grid. Wallbox Pulsar Plus, Fronius Wattpilot, and Ocular IQ all do this well.

We configure the diversion as part of the install, most clients save 60 to 80% on their EV electricity over the year by charging during the day from their own panels. It's the single biggest reason to spend slightly more on a smart charger than a basic one.
